Rare volunteer opportunity
Would you enjoy meeting people, both local and from all over the world?
Thirsk's information centre is volunteer-run and is looking for a few more volunteers. It is interesting work meeting visitors, but there are more local people that you might have expected. You will always be with an experienced volunteer Duty Manager who will show you the ropes.
Check if you meet these requirements
• Ahead of preparation of the monthly volunteering rota you can specify any days you are not available, for example on holiday. You can tell us which days you would prefer to work but, importantly, need to be flexible. An average of one 3hr shift a week is usual, either morning or afternoon, although more time may be available if you wish.
• Experience in a customer-facing role is helpful, but not essential. For example this might have been in a shop, as a sales person or talking with customers on the phone. Alternatively you might have been in a job dealing with people as a nurse or teacher for example.
• Knowledge of, and interest in, Thirsk, and North Yorkshire more generally, although most of us learn from others and our leaflets & publications.
• Basic IT skills such as finding information online. In addition to Google, we have our own information store & internal messaging – training will be given.
If you might be interested in volunteering, please phone Jocelyn Caramello for a chat about it on 07482 084643
All Creatures Great and Small
James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great and Small' will return for a sixth series, set in 1945 as the war in Europe draws to a close. The new season will feature six episodes in addition to a Christmas Special.
James Herriot was the pen name of vet Alf Wight practising on Kirkgate, Thirsk, in the premises which now house the 'World of James Herriot' museum.
Set once again in the charming village of Darrowby, based on Thirsk, the new episodes promise more heartwarming stories of humans and animals, now framed by post-war change. The Skeldale House team faces veterinary advancements, growing families, and a hopeful future.<!--EndFragment -->
It will air on Channel 5 on Thursdays from 25th September at 9pm.
In USA it will show on PBS Masterpiece in early 2026.
